Youth voice &  Statewide impact

The Alabama Youth Council gives young people who have grown up in Big Brothers Big Sisters programs a real seat at the table — shaping the decisions, programs, and partnerships that affect youth across our state. Founded and led by young leaders themselves, the Council brings together representatives from Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies across Alabama to advocate, advise, and lead.

 

Why It Exists

For 43+ years, Big Brothers Big Sisters has mentored young people across Alabama. The Alabama Youth Council makes sure those same young people help lead what comes next. Members bring lived experience to the table — informing how programs are designed, how funding is used, and how the organization shows up in communities statewide.

 

What the Council Does

• Advises on Big Futures, our statewide college and career readiness initiative, helping shape programming for young people ages 16–25

• Advocates with Alabama's elected officials and congressional delegation on behalf of youth and mentoring

• Represents the perspective of program participants in decisions made at the state level

• Serves as ambassadors for Big Brothers Big Sisters' mission in their home communities and agencies

 

Who's Involved

The Council is made up of young adult representatives, ages 16–25, selected by their home agencies from across Alabama's Big Brothers Big Sisters network. It is led by youth Co-Presidents, with support from the BBBS Alabama State Association.
